Here are just two examples of our mission in action:

12-year old Aly attends a school for the blind that is a long distance from his home. The school's donated computer with a synthesized voice is opening up a whole new world of opportunities for him. He now does his homework assignments, plays games, writes letters to his parents, and learns about new places and things in the donated talking encyclopedia. He already has decided that he wants to learn more about this magical device that allows him to do so many new things himself. He and his teachers are talking about how he can learn to be a computer programmer for the job he dreams about. Now he can dare to think about earning money and being somebody instead of a nobody.

Gretchen, in her third year of college, was in an automobile accident and lost much of her usable vision. For the next year she pursued every known medical restorative treatment. Then she had to face reality that her vision would never improve.

It was then that the donated computer with the program that would enlarge the words on her computer monitor was made available to her.

She learned about and used the special books that are available on computer disks and audiocassettes, and how to use a scanner to convert conventional books to a language that could be presented on her computer screen. She was able to finish college, go on to complete graduate school, and is now in her first job, preparing and reading her students' assignments and examinations.

At home she is surfing the Internet, paying bills, collecting recipes, and acting as the family genealogist. Her life did not come to an end. She expects to visit places that she had dreamed of, with her new husband, next year.
